fall 2024 - 3rd quarter timeout performance - sosa auxiliaries

The team performs at half time each home game as a part of SOSA (Spirit of San Antonio). When on the Pom Squad you are a member of the marching band. We rehearse with the marching band and attend band camp before the fall semester begins.

During home games, our team cheers and dances on the sidelines of the Alamodome. Any time music is playing - we are dancing!

SOSA learns multiple different half time shows through out the fall season. You can expect to learn AT LEAST 4 different half-time shows (ranging between 4-5 minutes long) as well as perform a 12 minute pre-game series (done at every home game).

Pom also performs 3rd quarter time out routines aimed to spice up the game day atmosphere and connect with the student body of UTSA. 3rd quarter time outs vary in style and length. 2024 marked the first year that all SOSA (Spirit of San Antonio) Auxiliaries (pom, colorguard, twirl) performed a timeout together! This performance was led and created by the student leaders of the SOSA Auxiliaries. We hope to make this a yearly tradition.

What does a typical rehearsal/practice day look like?

With the many performances we partake in - rehearsals move quickly. We practice as a team every Monday and Wednesday for approx. 1.5-2 hours before join the band proper of SOSA outside on the practice field. Friday practices may or may not include isolated pom squad sectional time. This will be determined by the needs of SOSA and the weekly football schedules. Rehearsals consists of warmups, learning and cleaning choreography, and producing performances. Members can expect to be taught and led by Coach and choreographer, Ashli Kelly, as well as student leaders.

Do we work on technique, skills, tricks, etc at practice?

The team is asked to do the majority of technique, strength training, and conditioning outside of scheduled rehearsals. Members are expected to come to rehearsal ready to produce performances asked of the team. This includes sideline routines, halftime shows as a part of the band, 3rd quarter time outs, pre-game series, etc. Isolated skills, tricks, individual highlights and choreographies will be rehearsed when such things are meant to be a part of given routines and upcoming performances. Students will never been sent out to perform without knowing exactly what is expected.

Does the pom squad compete?

The focus of the SOSA Pom Squad is to attend and support athletic events and other campus activities. Our goal is share, create, and promote school spirit. Competition is not our focus. We are aiming to expand our presence to Volleyball and Soccer games.

are there fees involved with being a part of sosa pom squad?
