Under the direction of benjamin pyles and randi miles

UTSA indoor is a competitive ensemble that meets during the Spring Semester. We are a part of the UTSA School of Music and under the large umbrella of the Spirit of San Antonio (SOSA) Marching Band. The ensemble is made up of roughly 40 UTSA students that are percussionist and visual cast members. UTSA Indoor, originally known as ROSA, (Rhythm of San Antonio) was formed in 2012, directed by Jonathan Tirado. The name UTSA Indoor was changed in 2016. This was to facilitate the combining of our separate color guard and percussion programs into one competitive ensemble. The group competes in a local Texas circuit(s) and the International circuit WGI. (Winter Guard International)

What you need to know for THOSE INTERESTED in auditioning for UTSA INDOOR…

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND UTSA TO BE IN the ensemble?

You must be enrolled at UTSA in order to be in the ensemble. UTSA Indoor is a part of the SOSA Marching band and is an official class. Each member MUST take the class once on the team. 1, 2, or 3 credit options are available. Class/team rehearsals are typically held Mon/Wed 6-10pm & Sat. 10am-6pm. There are Fridays thrown in as well to accommodate for competition prep.

What should I bring to auditions?

Yourself, water bottle, and a positive attitude! Personal drum sticks if desired. Equipment will be provided.

What should I wear?

Battery/Visual - Form fitting clothing that does not restrict movement and allows for body lines to clearly be seen. No jeans, long pants, or overly baggy clothing. Tennis shoes are a must. No large jewelry.

Front ensemble - Comfortable clothing that does not detract from playing abilities.

DOES IT COST ANY MONEY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE audition?

No. It does not cost you to participate.

WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I MADE THE TEAM?

You will know if you have made the team or not within a week after the day of the auditions.

WILL HOUSING BE PROVIDED during auditions?

No. You will need to find your own accommodations for audition dates. There a few hotels near campus should you need a place to stay.

Are the experience clinics mandatory?

The Clinics are not mandatory, but I would strongly courage you all to attend.  We will be covering everything required to have a successful audition.

What sort of instrumentation does the ensemble expect to cast?

We can march up to 9 snares, 5 Tenors, and 6 Bass Drums.  We will let the talent level dictate if those numbers are maxed out or not.  The audition process will be our guide while setting the ensemble instrumentation.

what does the front ensemble audition process look like?

Front Ensemble auditions will be broken into 3 options.  Mallet Keyboard, Piano/Synth, and Drum Set.  If you plan to audition for a specific mallet instrument, you will still prepare the same mallet keyboard audition as everyone else.

what if you are not sure what you want to audition for?

If you plan to audition for the battery, but still want to be consider for the front ensemble, you will have an opportunity to dictate that on the audition signup sheet.  Prepare for your first option only.  We want to see you play your best and most prepared on a single instrument.  If we have openings elsewhere that you'd like to consider, we will work with you individually.  If you want to be considered as a marching member, you MUST start there first to fulfill your visual audition requirements.

Do we have to move/dance?

Yes, there will be a visual audition.  Yes, it's probably going to decide who does and does not march for the season.  Front ensemble will not be involved in the visual portion of the audition.

Does it cost money to be a member of the enseMble?

Yes. Along with your tuition there are member dues that each member is required to pay to participate. We attempt to keep these fees relatively low however the competitive activity is not free! We also aim to provide fundraising opportunities. UTSA/SOSA does cover some costs for the ensemble as well to aid in not breaking the bank.

Do i have to be a musician in order to be a part of the ensemble?

No! We do have visual cast members (movers/dancers) that are also a part of our team and productions. The activity has continued to evolve over the years and the addition of visual effect members has become even more popular. Visual cast members can expect to move/dance, potentially help with moving of sets and props, and so much more
